Why Ayurveda?

Why Ayurveda?

What is Ayurveda?

“Ayur” (eye your) = Life in Sanskrit, “Veda” (vayda) = knowledge or science) . Ayurveda is “the science of life”. It is the ancient holistic science of India which aims at a total harmony of Mind, Body, and Spirit in balance with nature’s rhythms.

The traditional science of Ayurvedic medicine is designed to bring the body back into balance so it can heal itself . A beautiful concept. Ayurveda is often referred to as a sister science to yoga, they both come from the same tradition. Some scholars say Ayurveda precedes yoga.

Ayurveda teaches that each of our bodies are made up of a unique combination of 5 elements or states of matter. After discovering what was your unique constitution at birth it then works to help discern what your constitution is now .

It believes that true health is adjusting for everything that modern day life throws at us by bringing your body back to how it was when you were born. The first line of defense in combating imbalances is to try and identify and remove the cause of the imbalances.

Ayurveda also teaches that healthy digestive fire is the other key to sustained health . Ayurveda attributes 80% of all disease to imbalances of the digestive system and, therefore, much attention is given to its maintenance.

The elements and their 3 Dosha or Constitutions:

* Earth: stable, dense, heavy, grounded. It combines with water to become KAPHA. It’s described as cold and wet like the Spring

* Water: cool, smooth, fluid – (it can work to mediate KAPHA or PITTA) . The “water” or fluid is what helps regulate our stomach acid so we can digest things.

* Fire: hot, light, intense, fiery – PITTA This is your digestive fire (acids) and is described as hot and wet like the Summer.

* Air/Space: dry, cold, light, mobile, erratic – VATA This is what moves things in your body. It is described as cold and dry like the Winter

Ayurveda teaches us that if our constitution (our unique individual combination of the elements) increases too much, it fosters an environment where disease can take hold . So, keeping our eyes turned toward balance remains an important focus. For example, every time we get in a car or board an airplane, Vata or Winter (air and space) increases or when we eat hot peppers, Pita increases. When we sleep in or eat ice-cream in  can increase Kapha.

Imbalances can present themselves as anxiety and stress, insomnia, depression, weight gain, loss of appetite, high blood pressure, skin problems, digestive issues, acid reflux, and constipation, to name a few .

According to Ayurveda, living in harmony with nature’s cycles and rhythms is also important for the body to enjoy the self-awareness needed to heal itself and then build the clarity needed to provoke change in one’s life.

To achieve the needed balance and healthy digestion, Ayurveda encourages us to eat specific foods, herbs and spices which will bring our particular bodies into better balance . It encourages walking in nature and breathing fresh air, easy yoga poses, and meditation. Very often, recommendations will be different for each person regarding which foods and which lifestyle they should follow in order to find balance.

I began my Ayurvedic studies in 2007 and achieved my first certification as an Ayurvedic Counselor by The American Institute of Vedic Studies. I am a board certified professional member of NAMA, the National Ayurvedic Medical Assoc . on the practitioner level and manage the Pennsylvania Ayruvedic Medical Assoc . I continue to study, most recently at the International Ayurvedic Conference in India and at the Ayurvedic Institute in NM. Additionally, I recently completed an additional certification as a Vedic Counselor offered by Dr. David Frawley and Ed Zadlo through the The American Institute of Vedic Studies .

Larry Mangel: The Ayurvedic Wizard – Buzzsprout 60 min PODCAST

Our 2017 Beauty & Wellness Guide | PhillyVoice

I had been suffering from asthma, allergies, not to mention skin and stomach problems  when I turned to Ayurveda for help. I had been to an ENT doctor, allergist, gotten allergy shots and a nutritionist. I would follow instructions and the symptoms would diminish, but then come back full force . It was the worst….until I found Larry.

The consult was super cool. He said that the problem needed to be treated and not the symptoms in order for it to go away, which was a first. All of my doctors always seem to get wrapped up in treating my symptoms, that I almost seem to get more. From the second the consult began I was very comfortable with Larry . He was very nice, knew what he was talking about and most importantly, explained everything in a way I could understand. He explained the science of Ayurveda and how it works, and let me ask the questions I needed to. The consult lasted about an hour and 15 minutes.

I left with a list of his recommendations that were totally doable. It wasn’t like a a whole list of do’s and don’ts that seemed impossible which was great for the skin and stomach issues . For my allergies he left me with a few “recipe’s” to begin to treat it. The coolest thing about it, is that the recommendations and treatments are easy, affordable and work!!! I’m looking forward to my 6 month appointment with Larry! I feel great and can’t wait to see what to do next!

Larry did a consult for me after I acquired Lyme’s Disease this summer . I really valued the information he shared with me, the time he took to carefully listen to my concerns and his commitment to the entire holistic process. I had been on antibiotics for a month that were terrible and I knew I had to try something else to ensure that the symptoms did not come back. Larry recommended that I try an Aruyvedic approach and I am very glad that he did.

Larry prescribed several herbal remedies which I am still continuing to take, advised me on what foods would trigger my symptoms and provided recipes for me to use . I followed his directions and start feeling better within the week! I would definitely recommend Larry – he is dedicated to his practice, knowledgeable and understanding. His herbal knowledge is vast and very valuable for many different ailments. Thank you so much Larry!

I was recommended to Larry from the Shanti Yoga Shala Studio where I regularly practice yoga . I became interested in Ayurveda, and made an appointment for an hour long Ayurvedic Consultation to discuss my imbalances because I struggle with issues like fatigue during the workday, stress and emotional issues. Prescription medications weren’t helping to stabilize my moods.

I admit being very hesitant but Larry is extremely knowledgeable about Ayurveda, food, herbal supplements, yoga, meditation, subtle anatomy, and how all of these things can work together to make the body and mind more stable and balanced . Larry is very attentive to your needs as a client which made me feel better and more open to the process.

Larry recommended a “diet” based on my doshic reading, (foods I should be eating to balance my system, and ones I should avoid), started me on a regimen of herbal supplements, and recommended yoga poses and daily meditation.

Within days of simple changes to times that I eat, cooking differently and substituting foods, and adding herbal supplements into my daily routine I felt physically and mentally better. I felt more calm, more focused, more rested in the morning, more energized during the day. After discussion with my Dr, I’ve been able to come off of some of my prescriptions as well . I was initially surprised and now am so happy and grateful that I’ve found such a powerful alternative medicine to feel and live better. I have consulted with Larry and he has answered questions quickly. I plan on making another appointment with Larry as a follow up and continuing my Ayurvedic routine.
